Things are going to be looking a little bit different around Saturday Night Live tonight. Not only will the ubiquitous Channing Tatum be on hand to host the show for his first time (musical guest Bon Iver will make his Studio 8H debut as well), but the SNL cast will be short one member tonight. And the rest of the season, for that matter, as we reported on Tuesday that featured player Paul Brittain has exited the cast for good to “to pursue other projects.”

Yes, that unfortunately means no more  Goran “Funky Boy” Bogdan, no more “Sex” Ed Vincent, and no more Lord Cecil Wyndemere. Unless, of course, Tatum wanted to take on the task of playing Wyndemere. (Which would be a helluva sight, wouldn’t it?) While it’s doubtful the hunky star will actually play the little Lord for a sketch, it’s a safe bet that the actor will address his reign over Hollywood in 2012. Or, at the very least, we could hope for a Magic Mike-inspired sketch. (Then again when it comes to SNL male stripper sketches, nothing could ever come close or compare to this classic.)

Some could argue that Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC has made a mockery of the campaign-finance system. His self-created Super PAC, dubbed “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow,” has already demonstrated how easily the rules are manipulated and how few restrictions are placed on the committees. Mockery or not, Colbert’s Super PAC is laughing all the way to the bank.

Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow has raised $1,023,121.24 as of January 30, 2011, according to a filing the PAC made Tuesday to the Federal Election Committee. The filing, posted on his PAC’s website, included a cover letter that was quintessentially Colbert. It quoted the TV host as saying, “Yeah! How you like me now, F.E.C? I’m rolling seven digits deep! I got 99 problems but a non-connected independent-expenditure only committee ain’t one!”

Colbert’s Super PAC was approved by the FEC on June 30, 2011, after which they were legally able to collect money in support of whatever candidate they choose. And the PAC, so far, has produced the precise level of absurdity that his viewers have come to expect: one ad created by the committee encouraged Iowa caucus voters to cast their ballot for Rick Parry (with an “A” for “America,” with an “A” for “Iowa”). Their latest commercial aired in South Carolina attempted to get voters to choose Herman Cain in the state’s primary, despite the fact that the pizza executive dropped out of the race in December.

His persistent promotion and donation perks, including a shout-out on a scrolling ticker during his show, have enchanted the American people, many of whom are disenchanted with politics. Super PACs are allowed to accept unlimited donations and are not required to be affiliated with any particular party. One of the few restrictions – one by which Colbert was keen to abide – is that the Super PAC cannot be run or controlled by the candidate it’s supporting. That’s why when Colbert was “exploring” a presidential run, he momentarily transferred power to his Comedy Central cohort Jon Stewart, temporarily renaming it “The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC.”

Colbert, who portrays an insider-y Republican on his eponymous show, isn’t fooling the American people with his false GOP representation. In the FEC filing, he counts famous Democrats among his donors, including California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and West Wing actor Bradley Whitford. But it wouldn’t be a Colbert-run organization without some satire sprinkled in: NewsFeed came across donors on the list named “Harry Ballsagna” and “Pat Magroin.” We hope most of the other contributors detailed on the 147-page document are real – but with Colbert, coiner of the term “truthiness,” it’s often hard to tell.

Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow reported Tuesday that it has raised $1,023,121, according to a document filed with the Federal Election Commission.

An addendum to the disclosure contained language from Colbert that is not usually included in FEC reports.

“Yeah! How you like me now, F.E.C? I’m rolling seven digits deep! I got 99 problems but a non-connected independent-expenditure only committee ain’t one!” Colbert said.

The primary disclosure form, which runs through Dec. 31, lists donations of $825,475, which means Colbert raised almost $200,000 in the month of January alone.

In a statement posted to the super PAC’s website, Colbert said the money had been raised “in full accordance with the law.”

“It’s the way our founding fathers would have wanted it, if they had founded corporations instead of just a country,” Colbert said.

A $500 donation from Gavin Newsom, the Lieutenant Governor of California, is listed. His office confirmed the donation to CNNMoney.

And an actor named Bradley Whitford gave $250. It could not be immediately confirmed that the West Wing star did in fact donate.

A Rolling Stones tribute band called the Sticky Fingers Band gave $400. The band bills itself as “the greatest rock and roll tribute band in the world” on its website.

Armed with the ability to accept unlimited sums of money from corporations, unions, associations and individuals, Colbert’s super PAC has set about doing what other super PACs do: spending unlimited sums to overtly advocate for or against political candidates.

Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow ran ads in advance of the Iowa straw poll touting the candidacy of “Rick Parry.”

And while Colbert hit the campaign trail in South Carolina, the super PAC ran ads that referred to Mitt Romney as “Mitt the ripper.”

“If Mitt Romney really believes corporations are people,” the ad said, “then Mitt Romney is a serial killer.”

In one episode, Colbert enlists his lawyer, Trevor Potter, to create a tax-exempt 501(c)(4) so that he can obtain secret donations in a “completely transparent” way.

“Can I take this (c)(4) money and donate it to my super PAC?” Colbert asked after signing paperwork that registered the shell corporation in Delaware. “You can,” Potter said.

The camera then cuts to Colbert, whose face displayed a look of total shock. “Wait,” Colbert said. “What is the difference between that and money laundering?”

“The PAC is back, baby!” After regaining back the control of his Super PAC from the clutches of Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report host/current President of Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow Stephen Colbert announced on the Super PAC’s website that as of Tuesday morning, the Colbert Nation “has brought in a staggering $1,023,121.24.” (“My accountant explains to me that is a number far above ‘one,’ ‘two,’ ‘five,’ or even ‘many,’” Colbert noted in the statement.)

The fundraising donations for the Super PAC (formerly known as the Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC, but is “considering changing it again to John Colbert Cougar Super MellenPAC”) were sent in on the eve of the Federal Election Commission’s deadline for all Super PACs to file their financial disclosure reports. The entire 147-page document, which includes the names of donors, as well as a letter to the F.E.C. (in which Colbert states, “Yeah! How you like me now, F.E.C? I’m rolling seven digits deep! I got 99 problems but a non-connected independent-expenditure only committee ain’t one!”) is available to view here.

Colbert, continuing his blisteringly funny commentary on campaigns and campaign financing,  added in his statement regarding the impressive Super PAC funds — which were brought in with the help of brilliant campaign ads like this one – ”We raised it on my show and used it to materially influence the elections – in full accordance with the law. It’s the way our founding fathers would have wanted it, if they had founded corporations instead of just a country.” God bless Colber-ica.

JERSEY GIRL Katherine Heigl stars as ‘Stephanie Plum’ in One For The Money

In One for the Money, Katherine Heigl trades her usual straight blonde tresses for free-flowing brunette ringlets — a Julia Roberts ‘do — and the new hair looks good on her. It softens her features and brings out her brown-eyed-girl sparkle. Her personality gets a dye job, too. As Stephanie Plum, a screwup from Trenton who’s been wandering in the wilderness ever since she was axed from the lingerie department at Macy’s (cue the patronizing service-economy chuckle), Heigl serves up a light version of ”Guidette” mannerisms, and though she doesn’t overplay them, they don’t look comfortable on her either. She does working-class sexy slovenliness in an overly thought-out way.

Desperate for cash, Stephanie blackmails her cousin, a bail bondsman named Vinnie (Patrick Fischler), into giving her a job as a bounty hunter. Her assignment is to bring in a rogue cop, Joe Morelli, accused of murder (he’s played by Jason O’Mara, who’s like a more chiseled Aidan Quinn). That Joe happens to be the guy who took Stephanie’s virginity on the floor of a bakery back when they were still in high school — and then never called her again! — only fuels her motivation. Each time she chases Joe down and fails, once more, to take him in, the old sparks are supposed to fly, but One for the Money isn’t really a romantic comedy. Based on the first of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels, which came out in 1994, it’s more like a thriller pretending to be comedy (a thromedy?). Imagine an Elmore Leonard movie scripted by a bad Nora Ephron imitator, and you’ll have an idea of how dead-in-the-Jersey-water it is.

The convoluted plot has Stephanie wandering from one lead and suspect to the next, each one duller than the last. There are too many cliché settings (a boxing gym, an Italian pork store), too many lines like ”You’re out of your league!” and ”How’s that workin’ for ya?,” too many scenes with Debbie Reynolds as Stephanie’s what will she say next? feisty grandma, and never enough at stake. At one point, after Joe has subdued Stephanie by handcuffing her to the shower rod, she tells us, in voice-over, ”I confess, I fantasized about being handcuffed and naked in front of Joe Morelli once. Maybe twice,” and we’re supposed to think that that maybe twice is just the funniest kinky flourish. One for the Money is that kind of movie — it will have you groaning between yawns. D

Update, 12:55: It’s done. The big gamble paid off, and Coachella 2012, the first to ever be held across two weekends, has completely sold out.

And now passes will begin selling for three times as much on StubHub.

Original post: As Goldenvoice reps were warning prior to today’s on-sale, the first weekend of the 13th annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, April 13-15, has sold out in a hurry. It became official just minutes ago.

Word has been that remaining passes for the second weekend, April 20-22, were more abundant. But I suspect those are also going fast — assuming people can get through to purchase.

The sales pace seems to have been slowed by Front Gate Ticketing’s process itself, which requires a number of preparatory steps, plus a system that has been overwhelmed since 10 a.m.

Update, 12:20 p.m.: Now GA passes for Weekend 2 are sold out, too.

All that remain are passes-with-shuttle combos. Act fast, good luck.

It was a huge night for Katy Perry at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday (11Jan12) – even though the pop star’s marriage break-up prevented her from attending.

The I Kissed a Girl star pulled out of the event earlier this week (09Jan12) via a tweet but it was still very much her night as she picked up five awards, including one for her guest spot on TV comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Perry also claimed trophies for Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year (E.T.), Favorite Music Video (Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)) and Favorite Tour Headliner.

It was also a great evening for the cast of the final Harry Potter movie, The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – the film picked up awards for Favorite Movie, Favorite Action Movie, Favorite Book Adaptation and Favorite Movie Ensemble Cast.

TV hit How I Met Your Mother was a triple winner at the Nokia Theater ceremony – as well as Perry’s guest role prize, the show landed the night’s Favorite Network TV Comedy honour and Neil Patrick Harris took home the Favorite TV Comedy Actor award.

Johnny Depp and Emma Stone were among the double winners – he was named Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Animated Voice for his role in Rango, while she picked up the Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Comedic Movie Actress awards.

Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman beat out Harrison Ford, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford and Robert De Niro to be named the People’s Choice Awards’ first Movie Icon and Betty White celebrated her 90th birthday a week early – she was given a standing ovation as she accepted the Favorite Cable TV Comedy award for her sitcom Hot in Cleveland.

More than 230 million votes were cast for the 43 categories. The full list of winners is:
