SANGER, Texas — Country singer Randy Travis has apologized after being arrested on a charge of public intoxication outside a North Texas church. Denton County sheriff’s spokesman Tom Reedy said police in the town of Sanger arrested Travis early Monday after spotting a vehicle parked in front of a church and finding an open bottle of wine and Travis smelling of alcohol.

Reedy said Travis, whose hits include “Forever and Ever, Amen,” was brought to the Denton County jail about 1:30 a.m. and released six hours later.

The singer, who lives in the small town of Tioga near Sanger, apologized in a statement to The Associated Press “for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl.”

Travis, who launches a concert tour Friday, said he’s “committed to being responsible and accountable.”

The Super Bowl had a majority of hype coming into the game and in the end lived up to the build. However, just like the game, these two car ads for Honda CR-V and Kia Optima left us with just as much memories from the game with their excellent commercials. 

Let’s take a look at how these two commercials were excellent in each of their own special ways.

Honda CR-V

Hollywood is continuously churning out remakes or sequels to classic movies from the 80’s. However, we haven’t seen one of these done in commercial form. Honda tried and killed it during the Super Bowl with their remake (or sequel) to the popular movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

However, don’t take it from me, according to Mashable Business: 

Honda’s CR-V ad featuring Bueller star Matthew Broderick taking a day off (above) was the most-buzzed Super Bowl ad, according to Zeta Interactive. Honda’s ad received 91% positive buzz, narrowly beating out M&M’s “Mrs. Brown” ad and Budweiser’s “Eternal Optimism,” spot, which both got 90%, according to Zeta, which analyzes more than 200 million blogs, tweets, message boards and other social media posts.

Let’s hope that they keep this to a small commercial and not a full-blown remake of the movie. 

Kia Optima

Kia’s checklist for their commercial must have went like this: hot models in a bathing suit, plus Victoria Secret Model Adriana Lima, a car whipping around a race track, two lumberjacks sawing a giant hero sandwich, a bull rider riding a giant rhino, heavy metal band Mötley Crüe playing one of their best hits plus explosions while UFC Fighter Chuck Liddell is trying to kick someone’s head off.  

Because, in their ad they made sure to hit on almost everything that males aged 18-34 can relate to, or like that would push them to want to buy a Kia. 

The commercial was so good that it was ranked fifth on Superbowl-Commercials.org’s Top 10 list saying:

5. A Dream Car. For Real Life – Kia Optima

We’re not sure anyone would call an Optima a “dream car,” but this was certainly a dream commercial. The only reason this doesn’t rank higher on our list is because there’s not enough Adriana Lima.

These two commercials were just two of the many automobile spots that ran during Super Bowl 46. The other ones were good, but they didn’t provide the entertainment that these two spots did.

Monday is a rough day for Patriots fans, and decidedly better for the rest of us. Case in point, EXTRA host Maria Menounos. 

It seems that the TV host was confident that her beloved Patriots would be Super Bowl champions. She was so certain that she made a little bet. 

Well, as I am sure you are aware, the Patriots lost. And Maria is no welcher. She fulfilled her end of the bargain and hosted EXTRA in a bikini. And not just any bikini, but one sporting the colors of same New York Giants that broke her heart. 

It gets worse for Maria. She had to wear this bikini in New York’s Time Square. So not only was she in the heart of enemy territory, but it is not exactly summer like conditions in New York at the moment. 

A quick scan of the people surrounding her and you find a bunch of overcoats and bundled souls. 

While this was certainly an eye pleasing outcome for viewers of the show, it was not quite as entertaining as what would have happened had New England pulled out a victory.

Maria explains in this video that in that case, EXTRA’s New York correspondent, AJ Calloway was going to have to appear on TV in a Patriots cheerleading outfit. 

Consider all of this just another brick in the wall that is the divide between Boston and New York sports fans.

The deaths of a Washington man and his two sons in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide may mean the 2009 disappearance of the children’s mother may never be solved.

Josh Powell, a suspect in the disappearance of Susan Cox-Powell, died Sunday along with his two sons, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charlie, in what police believe was an intentionally set fire in Powell’s Puyallup, Washington, home.

It was a tragic development in a puzzling case that began two years ago in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley City, Utah, when Susan Cox-Powell, 28, went missing.

Josh Powell was never charged in her disappearance, and was embroiled in a bitter custody dispute with his wife’s parents.

Now, with his death, Cox-Powell’s relatives may never learn her fate.

The missing woman’s parents “firmly believed that (Josh Powell) was clearly a person of interest in her disappearance and her death, and they were very much opposed to him having any contact with the children or custody,” attorney Anne Bremner, who represented Charles and Judith Cox in the disappearance of their daughter, told CNN Sunday.

“Today is, of course, (a) devastating, horrific, unspeakable day,” she said, but “… Chuck and Judy, my clients, had always had very real and very serious fears about Josh Powell.”

Before Powell set fire to his home, he sent his attorney an e-mail saying simply: “I’m sorry. Goodbye.”

“This was all on him,” said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County, Washington, Sheriff’s Department. “He set this up. He did it.”

The sheriff’s department has copies of an e-mail Powell sent to his attorney as well as family and friends that said “he couldn’t live with what was going on,” Troyer said.

He said Sunday that the bodies had not been formally identified by a medical examiner, but “we believe it is the three of them.”

“This was something that was done deliberately and intentionally, and the plan was carried out very quickly,” he said.

The bodies were found together in the same room of the home, Troyer said.

The children, at least the older boy, Charlie, had reached the age where they may have been giving away information, Bremner said.

“I know that to be true in this case because as recently as Christmas, the boys told their grandparents, ‘Mommy’s in the mine. If we go to the mine, we’ll find Mommy,’” she said.

Authorities have searched mines in Utah and Nevada for Cox-Powell, she said.

Powell was the sole suspect in Cox-Powell’s disappearance, according to West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielsen.

“We always kept Josh as a target,” Nielsen told CNN affiliate KSTU-TV.

According to investigators, Powell had said the last time he saw his wife was the night he and his sons — then ages 2 and 4 — left to go camping.

Powell told authorities he left the house sometime after midnight in below-freezing weather for a desert area in Utah’s Tooele County.

It took me all of about a minute to understand why everyone is all excited about NBC’s “The Voice,” a show I didn’t watch last year, in its inaugural season, apart from a few late-season clips on YouTube. What took me so long? I don’t know. I guess I felt like my plate was already heaped with televised singing, since I also recap “Glee,” “American Idol,” “The X Factor” and “America’s Got Talent” for Show Tracker.

But I had no idea what I was missing until tuning in after the Super Bowl for Sunday night’s Season 2 premiere (Part 2 of the premiere airs Monday night). Now that I’ve hit my button and turned my thronelike chair around to behold its parade of talent and entertaining judge interplay (The judges have to compete for the contestants’ affection, just as the contestants have to compete for theirs? Genius!), well, I’m standing up and applauding, maybe reaching over and hitting another judge’s button. … You get the idea. I’m pleased to be tasked with recapping it for you this season. We’re gonna have fun.

So five singers were picked by the judge/mentors on Sunday night’s show. We also saw a few who sadly failed to spin a single throne. (Poor Daniel Rosa!)

Here’s who got the nod on Sunday:

RaeLynn: This 17-year-old, blond-locked country singer and Texas farm girl (sporting a whopping red flower that matched her smudgy red lipstick) sang Miranda Lambert’s “Hell on Heels,” a risky move given that judge Blake Shelton is married to Lambert. But (“Thank you, Jesus”?) the risk paid off: Both Adam Levine and Shelton hit their buttons to spin their “I Want You” thrones. And after they faced RaeLynn, they faced off with each other. Shelton coughed that he could make RaeLynn a country star. Levine, who mentored last year’s winning contestant, Javier Colon, countered, “Why would you want to be just a country star? Wouldn’t you want to be even bigger than that?” Yeah, not a winning tack. RaeLynn opts to be mentored by the husband of her “inspiration,” Shelton.

Jesse Campbell: This 42-year-old single dad, whose wife left him with their young daughter after his musical career failed to take off, managed to get back on his feet after a stint living without a home, sleeping in his car with his daughter on his chest. He’s now getting by as a church and wedding singer, and his vocal prowess on “A Song for You” captured the attention and interest of all four judges. Ultimately, it seemed to come down to Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera, who tangled like little devils over who would get Campbell’s soul. “From the moment you opened up your mouth, I said that’s my man. That’s my brother,” Green said. “I was feeling the soul too, even though I’m not, you know, the same color as Cee Lo,” Aguilera said. “Hey, Christina,” countered Green. “Everybody’s the same color with the lights off.” Campbell went with Aguilera. “You said you would fight for me, and I’m ready to fight,” he said.

Juliet Simms: This 25-year-old, raspy-voiced rocker from Florida spins Levine, Green and, eventually, Aguilera with her down-on-her-knees take on “Oh! Darling.” After Levine and Aguilera spar and Green dismisses what he deems to be their “sexual tension,” Green introduces his own element of sexual tension. “Baby, I am so thoroughly impressed and in awe of you. You turn me on,” Green growls. “Your voice is amazing. I heard the story of myself and my life in that performance. You look great. I love your style. I love your energy. Oh, my God.” Simms picks Cee Lo.

Chris Mann: This suit-wearing, blue-eyed, 29-year-old Kansan, who studied opera at Vanderbilt University, explains that he’s pursuing his music career backed by his mom, who’s struggling with pancreatic cancer — the same disease that killed Steve Jobs. Then he goes out there and sings Andrea Bocelli’s “Because We Believe,” prompting first Green, then Aguilera, to turn around. Green asked him why he chose that song. “It’s been hard for me. I’ve been at it for a while,” Mann said. “And I’ve tried to shrink my voice down to fit. But I decided for this show, I was going to just sing like myself.” Green told him his team was the one to choose “If you want to be yourself.” But Aguilera said, “I know what to do with real vocalists.” Mann went with Aguilera.

Tony Lucca: This former Mouseketeer may have shared the TV screen with Aguilera during their youth, but she doesn’t seem to share too many of his fond memories (or any memories, really). Lucca explains that while a lot of his Mickey Mouse Club cohort pursued pop stardom, he traveled the country singing in clubs. Now he’s got a pretty wife and cute son and another shot at big-time fame. His take on Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble” prompts first Levine, then Aguilera (who doesn’t seem to recognize her old cast mate), then Shelton to hit their buttons. Green’s back remains to Lucca until Levine hops up and presses Green’s button too. Levine heaps praise on Lucca (whose name Aguilera fails to recognize as well), and everyone else seems to be hanging back a bit to let Levine make his plea. “For the record, I pushed two buttons. Which is the first time in the history of ‘The Voice.’ That’s never happened before. Please, please, for the love of God, pick me.” Lucca does pick Levine. And the spin back around in the chair (or perhaps a voice in her earpiece) seems to shake some Mouseketeer memory loose under Aguilera’s mass of hair. She schleps backstage to congratulate Lucca — and rewards him for his patience by telling him Britney Spears had a crush on him. Awww.

Powell, 36, spoke with ABC News shortly after a court hearing Wednesday in which he was ordered to undergo psychosexual testing before he could regain custody of his sons, Charles, 7, and Braden, 5.

Less than a week later, Powell let his sons into his house for a supervised visit, but shut and locked the door before the social worker could enter. Moments later, the house smelled of gas and erupted in a ball of flames. The two boys and Powell died in the explosion.

In his final conversation with ABC News, Powell said he had no idea what images had been found on his hard drive that prompted the court to keep his children away from him and order him to undergo a psychosexual examination.

Despite the court ruling, Powell gave no indication of the rage that would drive him to blow up himself, his children, and his home.

Rather than being angry or upset by the court order, Powell was calm and more relaxed than usual and was optimistically looking forward to when he would regain custody of his sons.

Powell was the sole person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox Powell, 38, in 2009. He was never charged in her disappearance, but lost custody of his children after his father, Steven Powell was arrested on child porn charges last fall. At the hearing Wednesday, a letter from police said that images found on Josh’s computer were concerning for the welfare of the children.

Powell told ABC News that he had no idea what the images were, and wondered why police were bringing them up now, two years after they were reportedly found on his computer. He said he did not remember any inappropriate images at all on his computer from that time.

Powell also said he regretted the fraught relationship between his wife’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, and himself in the years since Susan’s disappearance. He said he was actually happy that his children had their maternal grandparents in their lives, a significant reversal from earlier statements in which he disparaged the Coxes and said they were poisoning the children with hatred for him.

Kids Claim Susan Powell Was in the Trunk

According to an attorney representing Powell’s in-laws Chuck and Judy Cox, one of the young sons was beginning to verbalize details about the night their mother disappeared, including an allegation that Susan was in the trunk of the family car, and disappeared shortly after they arrived at their campground.

“They were beginning to verbalize more,” Steve Downing said today. “The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that mommy was in the trunk. Mom and dad got out of the car and mom disappeared.”

The boys were 2 and 4 at the time of their mother’s disappearance.

In his final conversation with ABC News before his death, Powell continued to talk about his wife, Susan, in the present tense as if she were still alive. Susan has not been seen or heard from since 2009, but police have never found evidence that she is dead.

Josh also repeated his claim that his wife was a very sexy, flirtatious person. Powell’s father Steve Powell had even claimed she had flirted with him.

During his conversation with ABC News last week, Josh Powell said he didn’t visit his father in jail very often, and said was disappointed that his father claimed to be receptive to Susan’s alleged flirting.

In the summer of 2011, police searched the Washington state home where Josh and Steve Powell lived with the two boys. Steve was subsequently arrested after police found thousands of images of young women and girls. He is charged with child pornography and voyeruism.

The explosion Sunday at Josh Powell’s home was purposeful, according to Pierce County, Wash., authorities. The social worker who brought the children to a supervised visit at Josh’s house was locked out of the home by Powell. She immediately smelled gas and called her supervisor to report it.

Shortly after, the home exploded.

Josh Powell’s lawyer, Jeffrey Bassett, said he received an email from his client minutes before the explosion that said “I’m sorry, goodbye,” but he didn’t see it until two hours later, when he was informed of the blast.

Bassett told AP he knew his client was upset about being denied custody of his sons at a court hearing last week, when he was ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation and polygraph test in order to get them back.

Washington police say Josh Powell and his two young sons have been killed in an explosion at the Powells’ Graham, Wash., home. Officials are calling the deaths a murder-suicide.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office told FOX 13 News Josh Powell and his two sons, 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden, were killed in a planned, intentional explosion Sunday afternoon at the Graham home of Steven Powell.

CNN reports that a case worker had just dropped off Powell’s sons at the home for a supervised visit at around 12:45 p.m. Pacific time.

As the children got close to the door, Powell somehow got them inside but prevented the case worker from getting in as well, Graham, Washington, Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Gary Franz told CNN.

The case worker reported smelling something similar to gas, said Franz. A short time later, the house exploded.

Neighbors told KCPQ reporter David Rose that they heard something like a sonic boom and saw ash falling from the sky onto the roof, then flames burning between 30 and 40 feet into the air. Many said they didn’t know that Josh Powell was living in the home; they’d thought it was vacant.

Witnesses say firefighters had arrived within 12 minutes of the explosion, but by that time, the home had been destroyed.

The unstable condition of the residence on Sunday afternoon was hindering firefighters’ efforts to get inside and look for victims. Franz said there were concerns that the house could collapse.

Three bodies were found by the Pierce County medical examiner in a room inside the home and were removed from the home on Sunday evening. They are assumed to be Josh Powell and the two boys.

Police say they don’t believe anyone else was in the home at the time.

Det. Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said that this was not the first visit between Josh and the two boys and the visit did not seem any different than previous visits.

Josh Powell had been in the midst of a custody battle with the parents of his missing wife Susan Cox Powell. A custody hearing earlier this week ruled that the two boys would remain in the custody of Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan’s parents, but Josh would be allowed supervised visits. He would also be required to to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation and a polygraph.

Detectives told Rose that it appeared as if Josh had staged the house, including pictures of Susan on the walls, to make him appear as a good father, but they were skeptical of his innocence in all of it. They hesitated to call the incident a tragedy, saying instead it was an act of evil.

“Let’s not refer to this please in public as a tragedy. This was not a tragedy. This was a horrible murder of two little kids. Let’s not dress it up, let’s not sanitize it. Let’s call it what it is, which is something deeply wrong, which is not a tragedy, which is something evil,” said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor. ”This is going to hurt everybody’s heart who’s been involved. This is a horrible, heart-breaking situation.”

A lawyer for Josh Powell told the Associated Press he received a three-word email from his client just minutes before Powell and his two boys died in a house explosion. It said, “I’m sorry, goodbye.”

Attorney Jeffrey Bassett tells The Associated Press the email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, but he didn’t see it until two hours later, when others informed him of the blast. He says he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn’t see this coming.

Troyer said that emails were being received from Josh Powell’s email account in the hours following the explosion that led them to believe that the incident was planned. Officials have not said who had been receiving those emails.

Anne Bremner, a representative for the Cox family, released a statement Sunday via twitter, saying, “Chuck and Judy Cox need time. Thank you for giving them time, privacy and prayers.”

Steven Powell, who has been in the Pierce County Jail since been arrested for alleged child pornography, has been placed on suicide watch.

Pierce County deputies told KCPQ in Seattle that Steven was uncooperative with questions about the explosion and was not overly emotional. 

A court statement filed by Josh Powell petitioning for custody of the two boys alleges misconduct by the Cox family and reaffirms his longheld innocence in the disappearance of his wife. He also talks of Susan’s missing persons case and facing ridicule from many members of the media and public.

“I miss my wife and so do many other people. It has created a very difficult circumstance for our entire family. I have recently heard rumblings that some people are dipping deep down to the bottom of the barrel in a desperate effort to find and manufacture fault with me due to their attitudes. A lesser person would fall under the intense scrutiny I am facing, but apparently my inherent resilience as a person makes it increasingly difficult for them to pursue their agendas. I am standing tall for my sons, but it deeply hurts to face such ridicule and abuse,” the statement read. “I have done nothing wrong to deserve this treatment.”

Kirk Graves, husband of Josh Powell’s estranged sister Jennifer Graves, said that he was surprised by the incident, saying he never imagined that Josh was capable of killing his own children.

“I think it was two things. He knew the police were close. And I think he was afraid of the polygraph,” said Graves. “Closure for us would have been all the answers coming forward all the questions answered. There’s no answers anymore. Those answers are gone with him.”

Susan’s friend Kiirsi Hellewell said that Josh’s act was foul, cowardly and dastardly.

“I can understand if he wanted to end his own life but to murder his children? They’ve been nothing but possessions to him to them since they were born. He didn’t love them he doesn’t care about them. He just wants what he owns. If he couldn’t have them, nobody would,” she said.

West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielsen says detectives are going to Washington Sunday night. Nielsen will travel there Monday.

Nielsen says that the case against Powell is mostly circumstantial, but they were making progress. He believes Josh did kill Susan. They will now try to get a judge to release information on Susan Cox Powell now that Josh is dead.

“And most of the time during the criminal side of the investigation, Josh was calculating. He had a couple strategies in the case that we knew about in the method of how he wanted to be percieved and all of these things,” said Nielsen. ”Josh wan’t prepared for us and all these criminal cases. We had things like; Steven was charged and then the kids removed and they took stufff out of the house and Pierce County and they still have an on-going criminal investigation so I don’t want to say too much but all of that was initiated out of this case here.”

Josh Powell was the only person-of-interest in the Dec. 2009 disappearance of Susan.

Josh Powell’s note was simple and short, a farewell to the world after two years of being scrutinized in the media, hammered by police and questioned by judges, prosecutors and social workers, living his life under a microscope since the day his wife vanished.

“I’m sorry, goodbye,” Powell wrote in an email to his attorney just minutes before authorities say he set fire to his home, killing himself and his two young sons days after he was denied custody and ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.

The Sunday blaze at Powell’s home brought yet another twist in the very public scandal that began when Susan Powell vanished in 2009. The case had since spiraled into a salacious saga of finger-pointing and accusations of sex and lies — and now the unthinkable loss of two young lives caught in the crossfire.

A social worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell’s home Sunday for what was to be a supervised visit. They rushed toward the home, leaving the social worker behind. By the time she got to the door, Powell had let his sons in but locked her out, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas. Moments later, the home burst into flames, igniting an inferno that neighbors said rattled their houses.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said it appeared some sort of accelerant was used to make the house burn faster.

He said emails Powell sent just prior to the blaze seemed to confirm that Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn’t elaborate on the content of the emails.

Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received an ominous email from his client just minutes before the fire.

“I’m sorry, goodbye,” it read.

Susan Powell, a pretty 28-year-old mother of two, was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job in Utah.

Authorities in the couple’s hometown of West Valley City, about 10 miles outside Salt Lake City, quickly turned their attention to Josh Powell. He’s been the only “person of interest” in the case, but had repeatedly denied any involvement in her disappearance.

“I would never even hurt her,” a tearful, red-eyed Josh Powell told CBS’ Early Show in August. “People who know me know that I could never hurt Susan.”

About a month later, police spent 12 days in the remote central Utah desert looking for clues, and Josh Powell and his father, Steven, quickly disappeared from the limelight. The search area around Topaz Mountain, a popular spot for rock and gem hunters, was about 30 miles south of where Josh told police he went camping with his two children in the hours before his wife’s disappearance — his steadfast alibi.

On Sunday, the lawyer for Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, told the AP the children had started talking to their grandparents about things they remembered from the night their mother vanished.

“They were beginning to verbalize more,” said attorney Steve Downing, whose clients had custody of the children. “The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared.”

The New York Giants have done it again. Just as they did four years ago, the G-Men have beaten the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

As it inevitably would, the game came down to the final moments of the fourth quarter. The Giants got a go-ahead touchdown run from Ahmad Bradshaw, and the Patriots couldn’t get lucky enough on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the game. 

Final score: Giants 21, Patriots 17.

The road to the finish was long and winding. Let’s turn back the clock and retrace the steps of these two teams.

First Quarter

The Giants got out to a hot start in their first drive, going 35 yards in 10 plays to make it into New England territory. Their drive stalled, though, leaving them no choice but to punt it away.

Steve Weatherford was able to pin Patriots up against their own end zone, and that ended up paying off. The Patriots’ first play from scrimmage saw Tom Brady back into the end zone only to heave the ball deep down the field. Since there was nobody home, it was called intentional grounding.

Intentional grounding in the end zone, by the way, is a safety. That made it 2-0 Giants.

The Giants went right back down the field after taking the free kick following the safety. Ultimately, Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz from two yards out to stretch the Giants’ lead to 9-0.

At that point, it looked like the Giants were well on their way to a dominant victory.

Second Quarter

The Patriots got on the board less than two minutes into the second quarter, as Stephen Gostkowski connected on a 29-yard field goal try. That cut the Giants’ lead to 9-3.

Both offenses stalled for the rest of the quarter, but the Patriots got the ball with just over four minutes remaining in the half. All they had to do was drive 96 yards to the end zone.

Surprisingly, they did just that, and the drive culminated in a four-yard pass from Brady to Danny Woodhead with just 11 seconds to play.

The extra point made it 10-9 Patriots going into the half.

Third Quarter

The Patriots picked up right where they left off in the third quarter. Their first drive of the half went for 79 yards in eight plays, ending in a 12-yard pass from Brady to Aaron Hernandez.

The extra point pushed the Patriots’ lead to 17-9, and suddenly it looked like the Patriots were going to run away with the game.

The Giants held in there, though, and they were able to get two field goals from Lawrence Tynes before the quarter came to a close to cut New England’s lead to 17-15.

Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter quickly became a chess match. The Giants refused to give the Patriots anything, and the Patriots refused to give the Giants anything.

Ultimately, it came down to the Giants needing to make a defensive stop so they could get the ball back with a chance to take the lead. They did just that, forcing an incomplete pass from Brady on third-and-11 with just about four minutes to play.

The Giants took over at their own 12-yard line with less than four minutes to play. Their first play was a deep pass down the left sideline from Manning to Mario Manningham. He just barely got possession of the football and got both feet down. The Patriots challenged, but the play was upheld, resulting in a 38-yard gain.

The Giants marched right down to the Patriots’ 6-yard line, where they held the ball with just about a minute to play. The Patriots let Ahmad Bradshaw run right up the middle on a second down play. He tried to stop short of the goal line, but he fell in.

The score gave the Giants a 21-17 lead, but it also gave the Patriots the ball with time to score.

Brady was victimized by a couple key drops after the Patriots took over, but they were able to make it as far as midfield. With just five seconds left on the clock, Brady was forced to heave one up for grabs in the end zone.

The ball fell harmlessly to the ground.

So just like that, the game was over. 

Brady finished with 276 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception on 27-of-41 passing. Manning finished with 296 yards and a touchdown on 30-of-40 passing, and was named the Super Bowl MVP.

GRAHAM, Wash. – Josh Powell’s note was simple and short, a farewell to the world after two years of being scrutinized in the media, hammered by police and questioned by judges, prosecutors and social workers, living his life under a microscope since the day his wife vanished.

Just minutes before authorities say he set fire to his home, killing himself and his two young sons days after he was denied custody and ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation, Powell sent an email to his attorney.

“I’m sorry, goodbye,” he wrote.

The Sunday blaze at Powell’s home brought yet another twist in the very public scandal that began when Susan Powell vanished in 2009. The case had since spiraled into a salacious saga of finger-pointing and accusations of sex and lies — and now the unthinkable loss of two young lives caught in the crossfire.

A social worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell’s home Sunday for what was to be a supervised visit, and Powell let his sons inside — but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas. Moments later, the home burst into flames, igniting an inferno that neighbours said rattled their houses.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said it appeared some sort of accelerant was used to make the house burn faster.

He said emails Powell sent just prior to the explosion that authorities were made aware of seemed to confirm that Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn’t elaborate on the content of the emails.

Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received an ominous email from his client just minutes before the blast.

“I’m sorry, goodbye,” it read.

Susan Powell, a pretty 28-year-old mother of two, was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job in Utah.

Authorities in the couple’s hometown of West Valley City, about 10 miles outside Salt Lake City, quickly turned their attention to Josh Powell. He’s been the only “person of interest” in the case, but had repeatedly denied any involvement in her disappearance.

“I would never even hurt her,” a tearful, red-eyed Josh Powell told CBS’ Early Show in August. “People who know me know that I could never hurt Susan.”

About a month later, police spent 12 days in the remote central Utah desert looking for clues, and Josh Powell and his father, Steven, quickly disappeared from the limelight. The search area around Topaz Mountain, a popular spot for rock and gem hunters, was about 30 miles south of where Josh told police he went camping with his two children in the hours before his wife’s disappearance — his steadfast alibi.

On Sunday, the lawyer for Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, told the AP the children had started talking to their grandparents about things they remembered from the night their mother vanished.

“They were beginning to verbalize more,” said attorney Steve Downing, whose clients had custody of the children. “The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared.”

Police turned up no clues in their desert search, but a day before ending it, Steven Powell, 61, was arrested at his Washington state home and accused of secretly videotaping his daughter-in-law, other women, and young girls taking baths and sitting on the toilet in neighbourhood homes.

The elder Powell is now jailed and facing child porn and voyeurism charges. He claimed in previous television interviews that he and Susan Powell were falling in love and even implied a sexual relationship had occurred.

“Susan was very sexual with me,” Steven Powell said in one interview at the time. “We interacted in a lot of sexual ways because Susan enjoys doing that.”

Susan’s father denied the allegations and said Steven Powell had been initiating unwanted sexual advances, and that his daughter had no interest in her father-in-law.

The children, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charles, were ordered by a judge to then go live with Susan’s parents as the parallel cases were investigated.

The custody matter got so heated that at one point a court commissioner in Washington state ordered Chuck Cox and Josh Powell to keep 500 feet apart.

Custody hearings continued, with the latest on Wednesday, during which Josh Powell pleaded with a judge to return his children to him.

“For over four months already, my interactions with my sons and many other aspects of my character have been investigated and documented by” social services, he wrote in an affidavit to the court. “I have proven myself as a fit and loving father who provides a stable home even in the face of great adversity. … It is time for my sons to come home.”

But the judge ruled against him, ordering the children to remain with Susan Powell’s parents, at least until Josh Powell underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation in light of the explicit material found on computers inside Steven Powell’s home that led to his arrest.

Sherry Hill, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Social and Health Services, said the social worker who was with the children Sunday was not a Child Protective Services employee but a contract worker with a private agency that supervises visits for the state.

“The visit supervisor for this particular agency had taken the children to the home. When she does that, she sits through the visit and might take notes on her observations,” Hill said. “She pulled up in the car, and the kids ran out ahead of her. He closed the door and locked it. She wasn’t able to get in, and that’s when she smelled gas.”

Downing called it “the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening …The Coxes are absolutely devastated. They were always very fearful of him doing something like this, and he did it.”

Bassett said he represented Powell free of charge because “every parent deserves the right to an attorney.” Powell called or emailed him at least once a day, and often more than that, and in their conversations “he never once admitted doing anything regarding Susan. In fact, he denied it.”

Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah said it was too soon to say how Josh Powell’s death may impact their probe.

“Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we’re obviously just working through the details ourselves here,” said Powell, who is not related to the family.
