Tatum tell us he’ll be on hand to premiere the upcoming action-comedy “21 Jump Street.”

South By Southwest recently announced the movie’s world premiere as the Centerpiece of March’s film festival. Co-stars Jonah Hill and Ice Cube are expected to attend as well.

Tatum also stars in the upcoming romantic drama “The Vow.”

It’s based on the true story of a man whose wife doesn’t remember him after a serious car accident.

“The Vow” opens in theaters next Friday. South By Southwest begins March 9th.

Ben Gazzara, who made a career of playing virile roles on stage, screen, TV and in real life, died Friday in Manhattan. He was 81.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, his lawyer told The New York Times.

Accomplished as an actor, dapper and irresistible to women, Gazzara came by his many streetwise roles naturally. Born Biagio Anthony Gazzara on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the child of an Italian immigrant carpenter and roofer got the acting bug starting at age 12, at the Madison Square Boys’ Club. “My voice was this deep even then,” he told PEOPLE in 1976.

The urge to perform “screwed up my schooling,” he said, “because up until then I was a fantastically gifted student. I stayed out of school 54 days in a row and went to movies.”

Briefly attending night school at City College of New York, before making his way to Erwin Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop and the Actors’ Studio, Gazzara then burst onto Broadway in three straight hit roles. These included the booze-deflated Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (the role Paul Newman played in the movie) and the junkie in A Hatful of Rain (Don Murray did the movie). Theater critics hailed him as the new heir to Humphrey Bogart or Marlon Brando.

When Broadway stage roles dried up, Gazzara moved to California and appeared in movies, including Anatomy of a Murder and The Young Doctors. He also played his most famous role on TV, as a doomed attorney on NBC’s answer to ABC’s The Fugitive. Called Run for Your Life, it ran from 1965-68.

Even before early professional success there was an early marriage, to actress Louise Erickson. The union lasted from 1951 until their divorce in 1957. “I was married at 21,” he told PEOPLE. “What a moron I was! … It was that kind of romantic thing, built on nothing.”

His second marriage, to actress Janice Rule, with whom he had a daughter, actress Elizabeth Gazzara, ran longer, from 1961 until their 1982 divorce. At the time of his death, Gazzara was still married to his third wife (since 1982), former model Elke Stuckmann.

Gazzara’s later roles included those in movies directed by his close friend, the actor John Cassavetes, as well as in 1979′s Bloodlines and 1981′s They All Laughed, both of which costarred Audrey Hepburn, with whom Gazzara was romantically linked.

Even in his 70s and 80s, after having battled throat cancer diagnosed in 1999 and suffering a stroke in 2005, Gazzara remained active. He costarred with Nicole Kidman in the arty Dogville, and the Internet Movie Database currently lists him as filming two movies still in production.

He’s been married for nearly three years, but Channing Tatum isn’t slowing down when it comes to wooing wife Jenna Dewan.

“I see caring for somebody as a creative outlet,” The Vow actor, 31, told PEOPLE at a press gathering for the movie last week.

“I like drawing little faces and writing little stories and hiding them in places.”

His love notes to Dewan, 31, don’t come without a twist of humor, though.

“I’m a practical joker. My favorite one is putting one under the toilet seat,” he said with a laugh. “She always wakes up before I do, so I enjoy the surprise of ‘Haha! I got you!’ “

In his latest role, Tatum plays a husband who has to make his wife fall in love with him again after she loses her memory in an accident. The star admits that sometimes it’s easy to get “distracted … and forget about being thoughtful” in everyday life.

But it sounds like Dewan is one of the lucky ones when it comes to partners. “I don’t think it’s that hard to be thoughtful,” said Tatum, “especially when you do care about the person.”

In 2010, I wrote a story about Bill Murray that examined his unique status with the current crop of moviemakers and his unusual method of managing his career — no publicist, no agent, just a 1-800 number. In the course of reporting the story, I interviewed several filmmakers and costars who had memorable tales to tell, from his star-making days at Saturday Night Live to hit films like Zombieland and low-budget indies like Get Low. By far, my favorite anecdote was one from Harold Ramis, who collaborated with Murray on six successful films, the last of which was 1993′s Groundhog Day. During that production, Murray’s first marriage was dissolving and the star was, by many accounts, occasionally cranky. “I learned to step back,” said Ramis. “You don’t step in front of a train. You just let it go by.”

Below, in Ramis’ own words, is how Murray responded to filmmakers’ requests to better the lines of communication during the making of Groundhog Day:

“Bill had all these obvious resentments toward the production, so it was very hard for a time to communicate with him. Calls would go unreturned. Production assistants couldn’t find him. So someone said, ‘Bill, you know, things would be easier if you had a personal assistant. Then we wouldn’t have to bother you with all this stuff.’ And he said, ‘Okay.’ So he hired a personal assistant who was profoundly deaf, did not have oral speech, spoke only American sign language, which Bill did not speak, nor did anyone else in the production. But Bill said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to learn sign language.’ And I think it was so inconvenient that in a couple weeks, he gave that up. That’s anti-communication, you know? Let’s not talk.”

Believe it or not, once upon a time some of us actually liked Katherine Heigl. She had (or at least displayed) genuine verve and vulnerability and charm, and if you tried hard enough you could imagine her one day achieving The Full Julia. So perhaps the saddest thing about the very sad One for the Money is just how far away those days now seem. In this wan adaptation of the first of Janet Evanovich’s 18 novels featuring Stephanie Plum (that’s right, at some point somebody thought this might become a franchise), Heigl plays the down-on-her-luck Jersey heroine who reluctantly but desperately takes a job working for a sleazy bail bondsman; she winds up having to bring in an old flame, a cop accused of murder. Plum is supposed to be out of her element here, but she’s also supposed to discover inner reserves of pluck, wit, sass, and ingenuity (asked early on how comfortable she is with low-lives, she replies, “I sold lingerie for three years in Newark!”). So why does Heigl – and the film around her – display none?

Narrating the story in what amounts to a drone (enhanced by an unfortunate, though thankfully subtle, Jersey accent), Heigl sleepwalks through her scenes, and there’s something curiously willful about her indifference to what’s going on. When she connects with her old high school flame and now-murder-suspect Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara), we’re supposed to see sparks fly and old attractions re-enflamed, but the two barely seem to know each other; their body language feels completely off. (This thing makes the Gerard Butler-Jennifer Aniston vehicle The Bounty Hunter look like Elvira Madigan.) Mixing genres, the movie is supposed to be romantic, funny, and suspenseful, but the only tension generated comes from the awkwardness of watching actors who clearly don’t want to be anywhere near each other. Some films fall apart because the actors seem to be having too much fun. (Ocean’s 12 comes to mind.) This is one that falls apart because everybody on screen seems to be dying inside, and we can smell it.

One can’t just blame it on the actors. The script allows characters to drift in and out of the story seemingly at random – mysteries and crime stories do tend to be structured in this episodic way, but there’s usually a sense of purpose, a feeling that it’s all building towards something definable and exciting. Here, it feels slipshod and disjointed, almost as if scenes have been placed out of order. True, the intention here is to keep things lighthearted, with a minimum of fuss, but absent any actual humor or wit or charm, the result is just glacial inconsequentiality.  

Could the odd filmmaking then be the result partly of these aforementioned qualities? As if, maybe, director Julie Ann Robinson is trying to cover for the bad performances and the lame script (and her own flat footage)? Random lines of dialogue seem to hang in the air awkwardly, but then again sometimes everything seems cut to within an inch of its life, with characters speaking over each other in an inorganically annoying, ping-ponging way. The whole thing feels unnatural, as if someone was trying to create a rhythm for the movie in the editing room.  Not surprisingly, they failed at that, too.

JERSEY GIRL Katherine Heigl stars as ‘Stephanie Plum’ in One For The Money

In One for the Money, Katherine Heigl trades her usual straight blonde tresses for free-flowing brunette ringlets — a Julia Roberts ‘do — and the new hair looks good on her. It softens her features and brings out her brown-eyed-girl sparkle. Her personality gets a dye job, too. As Stephanie Plum, a screwup from Trenton who’s been wandering in the wilderness ever since she was axed from the lingerie department at Macy’s (cue the patronizing service-economy chuckle), Heigl serves up a light version of ”Guidette” mannerisms, and though she doesn’t overplay them, they don’t look comfortable on her either. She does working-class sexy slovenliness in an overly thought-out way.

Desperate for cash, Stephanie blackmails her cousin, a bail bondsman named Vinnie (Patrick Fischler), into giving her a job as a bounty hunter. Her assignment is to bring in a rogue cop, Joe Morelli, accused of murder (he’s played by Jason O’Mara, who’s like a more chiseled Aidan Quinn). That Joe happens to be the guy who took Stephanie’s virginity on the floor of a bakery back when they were still in high school — and then never called her again! — only fuels her motivation. Each time she chases Joe down and fails, once more, to take him in, the old sparks are supposed to fly, but One for the Money isn’t really a romantic comedy. Based on the first of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels, which came out in 1994, it’s more like a thriller pretending to be comedy (a thromedy?). Imagine an Elmore Leonard movie scripted by a bad Nora Ephron imitator, and you’ll have an idea of how dead-in-the-Jersey-water it is.

The convoluted plot has Stephanie wandering from one lead and suspect to the next, each one duller than the last. There are too many cliché settings (a boxing gym, an Italian pork store), too many lines like ”You’re out of your league!” and ”How’s that workin’ for ya?,” too many scenes with Debbie Reynolds as Stephanie’s what will she say next? feisty grandma, and never enough at stake. At one point, after Joe has subdued Stephanie by handcuffing her to the shower rod, she tells us, in voice-over, ”I confess, I fantasized about being handcuffed and naked in front of Joe Morelli once. Maybe twice,” and we’re supposed to think that that maybe twice is just the funniest kinky flourish. One for the Money is that kind of movie — it will have you groaning between yawns. D

Actor James Farentino, who appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, died Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital, according to a family spokesman. He was 73.

Farentino died of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital after a long illness, said the spokesman, Bob Palmer.

Farentino starred alongside Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen in the 1980 science fiction film “The Final Countdown.” The movie featured a modern aircraft carrier that travels back in time to Pearl Harbor hours before the Japanese attack.

Farentino also starred opposite Patty Duke in 1969′s “Me, Natalie.”

In 1967, he won a “Most Promising Newcomer” Golden Globe for his performance in the comedy “The Pad and How to Use It.”

He also had recurring roles on “Dynasty,” “Melrose Place,” “The Bold Ones: The Lawyers” and “ER,” playing the estranged father to George Clooney’s character.

In 1978, he was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Saint Peter in the television mini-series “Jesus of Nazareth.”

A four-time divorcee, Farentino’s tumultuous personal life made headlines, too.

In March 1994, he pleaded no contest to stalking his ex-girlfriend Tina Sinatra, daughter of Frank Sinatra.

In 2010, the actor was arrested at his Hollywood home on suspicion of battery when he tried to physically remove a man from his home.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1938, Farentino is survived by two sons, David and Saverio.
