In the last 24 hours, thousands of women turned to Twitter and Facebook to express their anger over the decision by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, to halt financial support for cancer screening and education services at Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Planned Parenthood, as my colleague Pam Belluck reported, accused Komen of bowing to pressure from anti-abortion rights activists, prompting a passionate online discussion from both sides of the abortion debate, as well as thousands of online messages lamenting the role of politics in women’s health care.

Beyond politicians and advocates, some authors, including Judy Blume and celebrities, including actress Dana Delaney jumped into the conversation on Twitter.

On Wednesday, Susan G. Komen was a top Google search term, falling just below Don Cornelius, the creator of “Soul Train,” after news of his death was announced. It was also a top trending topic in the U.S. on Twitter. And more than 5,000 people left comments on a post that Komen made on its Facebook page defending its decision, which the foundation said was not made in response to pressure from opponents of abortion rights.

On the Red State blog, Erik Erikson applauded Komen’s decision and urged people to send a thank you note and a donation to the organization.

Groups, including Americans United for Life, also urged people to show their support for the Komen Foundation on Facebook.

While there were comments on Facebook, Twitter and online message boards praising Komen, an analysis by Polipulse, a social media analytics tool for a Washington-based public relations firm showed that 75 percent of the people posting on social media channels about the decision were sharing negative comments about Komen’s decison while 25 percent supported it. According to the analysis, more than 20 percent said that they would not give money to Komen because of the move.

Some people called on their Facebook friends and Twitter followers to turn in their pink ribbons and offer financial support to Planned Parenthood instead of Susan G. Komen. An online letter was shared by more than 19,000 people. By Wednesday afternoon, Planned Parenthood was advertising on Twitter using promoted tweets to help raise money.

Raising money online, alone, generated $400,000 by Wednesday evening, in addition to a $250,000 donation from a Dallas-based organization.

In an article by Gardiner Harris and Pam Belluck about the Komen foundation, a board member said that Planned Parenthood exploiting the news as a fund-raising opportunity.

Some of the online discussion centered on Karen Handel, the Komen foundation’s senior vice president for public policy since April 2011, who ran on an anti-abortion rights platform during an unsuccessful bid for governor of Georgia in 2010. The blog, Jezebel, found a post on Ms. Handel’s campaign blog stating that she did not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.

And both organizations used social media throughout the day to communicate their position, including a Komen organization in Connecticut that announced on its Facebook page its frustration with the decision to cut funds for Planned Parenthood.

“The Hunger Games” will debut on the big screen in less than two months, and Lionsgate has released a second trailer for the highly anticipated first installment of the trilogy based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novels.

The latest spot gives fans a bit of a better glimpse into the world of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth).

America’s most famous weather prognosticator this morning predicted six more weeks of winter, although people in the Carolinas and elsewhere across much of the United States wonder if winter ever started.

Punxsutawney Phil, the annual star of Groundhog Day, was pulled from his burrow by handlers shortly before 7 a.m. in Punxsutawney, Pa., and reportedly “saw” his shadow.

According to legend, that means six more weeks of wintry weather.

But Phil was in the vast minority among groundhogs this year. A check of a half-dozen other prognosticating critters showed all six did not see their shadows, which means an early spring.

Groundhogs across the United States and Canada are “making” predictions today — in many cases, amid festival surroundings like those in the small Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney, southeast of Pittsburgh. In Charlotte, a groundhog named Queen Charlotte will look for her shadow at 3 p.m. at the Charlotte Nature Museum.

Actually, Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see anything. His prediction annually is made in advance by the Inner Circle, a group of men wearing top hats and tuxedos. The actual weather at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, when Phil’s prediction was made, was fog and mist in Punxsutawney.

The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.

Here is how other “famed” groundhogs are predicting the rest of winter:

General Beauergard Lee (Atlanta) … an early spring. He emerged from his Weathering Heights Plantation burrow at 8 a.m. and did not see his shadow. General Lee, incidentally, has honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University.

Wiarton Willie (Wiarton, Ontario) … no shadow, so an early spring.

Shubenacadie Sam (Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia) … no shadow, an early spring. Incidentally, it’s been mild this winter over eastern Canada, too. Environment Canada, that nation’s version of the National Weather Service, is predicting bitter cold for the rest of the winter in the western and northern parts of the country.

Jimmy (Sun Prairie, Wis.) … no shadow, an early spring.

Dunkirk Dave (Dunkirk, N.Y.) … no shadow, an early spring.

Staten Island Chuck (New York City) no shadow, an early spring.

Regardless of what Phil did or didn’t see, winter really hasn’t started in much of the country.

In fact, the temperature in Punxsutawney at 7 a.m. was in the mid 30s, well above the seasonal average of 17 degrees. That part of Pennsylvania — along with the Carolinas, and most of the eastern and central United States — has seen very balmy conditions this winter.

There have been no wintry precipitation events in the Carolinas, and very little snow in the Great Lakes, Midwest, and East Coast.

Amid the mild weather, a crowd estimated between 15,000 and 18,000 people gathered at Punxsutawney for a festival that included a fireworks display at 6:30 a.m. Among the spectators was Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

And festival organizers have not missed the rise of social media, as Punxsutawney Phil now has Twitter and Facebook pages — as do some of the groundhog prognosticators elsewhere in the United States and Canada.

Records show that the Pennsylvania event began in 1887, with a newspaper city editor. Clymer Freas, an editor at the Punxsutawney Spirit, organized a festival, based on an annual groundhog hunt held annually in early February by local hunters.

Interest in the event exploded after release of the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray.

The National Weather Service office in southwest Pennsylvania has cast a bit of cold water — reality, if you will — on Phil’s predictions. According to meteorologists, Phil’s predictions over the past 20 years include 4 correct, 6 wrong, and 10 “ties.” Those ties come in years when one of the two remaining winter months, February or March, was consistent with the groundhog’s prediction but the other wasn’t.

Meteorologists seem to think Phil will miss again this year. The Climate Prediction Center is calling for above-average temperatures for the remainder of winter over much of the United States, including the Punxsutawney area.

That doesn’t bother Mike Johnston, vice president of the Inner Circle.

He told the Associated Press that Punxsutawney Phil’s predictions are not site-specific.

If Phil predicts six more weeks of winter, said Johnston, “I guarantee you someone’s going to have six more weeks of winter.”

The Carolina Panthers have altered their logo for the first time in the franchise’s 18-year history, making slight refinements to provide what the team called “a more aggressive, contemporary look.”

“We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark,” Panthers President Danny Morrison said.

The Panthers had not planned to release their new logo Sunday night during the NFL’s Pro Bowl game as they ultimately did. But their hand was forced by a picture posted on Facebook by Nike Football and some resulting questions from the Observer.

The Nike Football Facebook page showed 32 pictures of different versions of a new NFL glove produced by Nike, each with an NFL team logo. Instead of the logo the Panthers have used since they began play in 1995, the Nike Panthers gloves carried a logo close to – but not identical – to the new logo the Panthers were getting ready to unveil within the next few days or weeks. To avoid confusion, the Panthers sped up their internal timetable.

The NFL’s creative department was responsible for tinkering with the Panthers’ logo. The primary changes are in the eyes, whisker and mouth area. The presence of the Panthers’ blue color also has become more striking in the logo.

The Panthers plan to transition to the new logo throughout 2012. They also have changed their primary logo typeface.

“It is a cleaner style that is easier to read and should be more applicable to different uses,” Morrison said.
